Everything is coated after it snowed and then froze into a solid sheet of ice. There is nothing to do but plan so I've been perusing catalogs like everyone else.
Another thing I like to do in winter is use photoshop to paste images of plants I want on to existing photos of my garden. It looks kind of silly, but it helps me visualize ideas. I'd much rather design outside with actual plants. Any idea like this could likely change once I'm out there, but since It's 18 degrees it gives me something to do.
I'm considering a variegated Ilex aquifolium which has purple berries. It's listed in Wayside's catalog with a trademark name - Gold Coast® and also a cultivar name - 'Monvila.' It's a much needed 4 season plant that should help with the aforementioned winter interest.
I've pasted it in to the right of the leafless branches of a Hydrangea quercifolia. I was considering moving that plant to another spot because I didn't like the way it's cream colored flowers looked with all the bolder colors of the surrounding plants. But perhaps if I add this variegation next to it will blend everything better.
Or maybe I'm just avoiding the task of moving the hydrangea which would in turn cause other plants to need moving. Hmmmm.
